She told us what we would see inside, and what to look for. On this day they had an exhibition of 1920’s clothes which could be found in almost every room. The first room to see after entering the house is the Reception Hall. We exited the house and took a last look at the reflecting pool. Walking through the gardens with very few people present gave us an air of tranquility. Shops, hotels, restaurants and points of interest for the home and garden obsessed on the go.

Summer is the perfect time to attend their Summer Nights program and take in the roses and dahlias. Fall gifts visitors with a kaleidoscope of autumnal colors. But even with our soggy shoes and cold noses, wandering the gardens in the rain had a magical feel that I wasn’t prepared for. The rain splintered on the ground and refracted off the bulbs adorning the trees and bushes around us, casting sparkling light that guided us through the dark paths. The four of us emerged from the Woodland Garden, an informal area filled with camellias and staghorn ferns, and found ourselves on a paved terrace equipped with drink stands.

Visit Virtually

Filoli is an expansive landscape situated on the unceded ancestral lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone. Today, this estate serves as a community cultural center open daily to the public. Spring is when the majority of flowers are blooming, including tulips, wisteria, camelias, and magnolias! They do have camellias blooming throughout the gardens, and there are a ton! The main attraction for winter is the extended nighttime hours for Holidays at Filoli. There aren’t as many flowers in fall, but the orchid is open to explore and the roses are still blooming!

History

In 1975, she donated the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and established an endowment to maintain the gardens in perpetuity. Although she had by then moved to a smaller property nearby, she returned many weekends to wander the estate’s brick walkways and leafy allĂ©es punctuated by rustic wooden benches. “She would bring sweet rolls to the gardeners and walk her dogs,” says Coonan.

What's Blooming

At Filoli we create inspiration in everyday life by welcoming all to experience the House, Garden, and natural lands. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by the protected Peninsula watershed. Every spring, Filoli plants thousands of bulbs around the House and Garden. Follow along their journey and watch their transformation from bulb to flower. Never mind that they are unfairly assigning racist motives to thousands of people protesting the killing of more than 34,000 Palestinian people, most of them women and children. It’s clear that these Republican politicians are less concerned with the wave of antiwar protests than using them for their own political ends.

They also have Orchard Days on weekends where you can learn about the harvest season while you eat and listen to live music. Vibrant tulips, blooming fruit trees, and a radiant sunset display nature’s beauty during the Golden Hour. Hike the trail at twilight or attend a free Bulb Talk with Filoli’s Interpretive staff. Connecting our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature and shared stories. San Mateo County historian Frank Stanger cited sizeable groves of redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in the Laguna Creek watershed. In the area around Filoli he described two historic lumber mills.

This gorgeous mansion and its beautiful gardens are only about a 30 minutes drive from San Francisco. The road zigzags in the Santa Cruz Mountains until you suddenly see the Filoli sign on the side of the road. The mansion is not visible from the main road, but a small road surrounded by some fields will take you to the parking lot. Since we live in the San Francisco Bay Area and relatively close by, we have visited the magnificent Filoli Historic House & Gardens multiple times. It has been a great place to take our guests to, or just to go enjoy different seasons and flower blooms. Filoli is such a tranquil place and we find something new on each visit there.

Local community groups take part in nature and historical education programs on-site, too. The estate stayed open for much of the pandemic, with adjusted procedures in line with state and local guidelines; the county recently lifted its indoor mask mandate for vaccinated guests, but masks are still required for unvaccinated visitors. The Roths, Salyards says, wanted the estate to be a place of horticulture significance, where people could visit and learn about the astounding aspects of nature.

Many families were out for Mother’s Day, including mine, and the bright colors and unhurried atmosphere made everything feel lighter. Filoli, Woodside’s historic estate has long been a holiday lights destination. But the grounds are simply spectacular, with 16 acres of formal gardens, 250 fruit trees, a vegetable garden and a daffodil meadow planted with more than 75,000 spring bulbs. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by more than 23,000 acres of the protected Peninsula watershed. To the two families who lived here, Filoli represented a desire to create a magnificent and enduring country estate. Today, Filoli’s mission is to connect our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature, and shared stories.

Although it seemed safer from earthquakes than in The City, the Bourn family constructed their house only 200 yards away from the San Andreas fault. The formal gardens blend two English garden styles — 18th-century Georgian gardens and the more formal English Renaissance style — and were completed in 1929. Passing through the rainbow gradient of blooms in the Rose Garden, I milled around peacefully, letting the sun warm my face and the wind blow the hem of my dress around my ankles.

The Georgian-style terraces in the Garden highlight sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their simple design is a contrast to the formal English Renaissance-style garden to the south, which features lush flower beds, yew-lined avenues, and centerpieces like the Sunken Garden. That is simply the best time to see the most flowers in bloom.

Not only are the cherry trees blooming, but also the colourful daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and blue violas are at their best. Filoli is a historical estate with 16 acres of amazingly beautiful gardens open to the public. It is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and ran and maintained by its staff with some 1,200 volunteers.

“We were very focused on the two families who lived in the homes, and those stories are great, but there’s so many more stories here,” Newport said. In a landscape that provides so much beauty, it’s easy to be overtaken by the glory spread out before you, but Filoli is a place to take your time, do some exploring and look for the details that make the difference. Outdoor adventures abound in the Bay Area, where 10,000 miles of trails wander across more than 300 mountains, 19 state parks, eight national park units — and one very civilized, almost-Gilded Age garden.

Lean UX by Jeff Gothelf

This book really helped my understanding of how you should build and grow a product based startup. The main theory and methodology is that of a Lean Startup, of creating a Minimal Viable Product, and then being agile and efficient, testing early and then iterating until what you have is right. This is one of my all-time favorites, and it delivers exactly what is says on the tin.

It’s one of the most gorgeous spots on the entire property and can be viewed from either end (but you cannot walk on the grass as it’s roped off). Filoli is open later on Thursday nights throughout the summer and you can visit by reserving the special “Summer Nights” tickets. From 5-8pm, you can explore the garden, grab a bite at a food truck, or grab a drink at the Hummingbird Bar.

Now, back at the entrance, it was time to take a quick tour of the 54,000+ square foot. Including 17 fireplaces, 15 bathrooms, 14 staff bedrooms and 10 family bedrooms. Fortunately, the self-guided tour only takes you to a relatively small number of rooms. After their deaths, the 654-acre estate was sold to William and Lurline Roth, who continued to expand the gardens. Lurline was a particular fan of camellias – she was crazy for camellias, Salyards says – and a large variety of the shrubs can be found throughout the formal gardens. Near the estate swimming pool stands a Camperdown elm planted decades ago.

These tickets must be purchased in advance, even if you are already a member. My favorite thing about visiting in summer is the rose garden! Spring is by far the most popular season to visit Filoli, which means insane crowds — especially on weekends. It’s peak flower-blooming season, the weather is lovely, and everything just feels right in the world. We envision a time when all people honor nature, value unique experiences and appreciate beauty in everyday life.

The walled garden consists of a series of enclosures, including the stained glass window design outlined in clipped box. The most expensive time to visit is during the winter when the house and gardens are decked out for the holidays. The formal gardens include several areas, including the Wedding Place, named for Berenice Roth's wedding location in 1941. Lurline and Berenice both had their wedding receptions at Filoli, but Berenice's wedding is the only one that has ever taken place at Filoli when it was a private home.

The Garden House is an all-glass l’orangerie, or greenhouse, that unsurprisingly gets beautiful light flooding through it. You can walk through it or hang out at one of the small tables on either side of it next to the brick walls. You can also see many other areas of the house, including a library/study with commissioned portrait sketches by John Singer Sargent!

There are also natural springs and creeks, a reservoir, and cultivated grasslands. The rose bushes were just stumps in February (2022) and were still not blooming in April (2023). In October (2023), the roses were in bloom, but there were not as many as summertime. I like to dress up a bit to fit in with the flower-filled gardens and French vibes of the property. I’ve visited every season and have experienced all the changes to the gardens and the house each season. In 1975 Mrs. Roth donated the place to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The mansion was built between 1915 and 1917 to be a home for the Bourn family. William Bowers Bourn II spent a lot of time in Europe and was fascinated by the architecture over there. He brought his ideas with him and used them on this mansion. Filoli is a popular place for day visits and outdoor walks, and even some artists working. They also have a handful of nice events and it is used as a wedding venue.

On Sunday afternoons through September 26, performers will take to Filoli’s birch- and dogwood-shaded outdoor stage. Another jewel of the property, the Sunken Garden is filled with water lilies and flanked by dramatic flower beds, and it sparkles just as brightly in the sun of the warmer months as it does on winter holiday evenings. Sitting in deck chairs under the glass awning among potted flower displays in front of the glamorous pool, my mother and I have passed many a leisurely afternoon.

The largest gardens are working gardens for the production of cut flowers for the mansion and for the growing of some vegetables. The move to demolish came shortly after Pratt purchased the mid-century home in an off-market sale for $12.5 million in January 2023. The house is located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, across the street from Pratt’s mother-in-law, former first lady of California Maria Shriver. The historic house will be replaced by a modern farmhouse designed by architect Ken Ungar, Architectural Digest reported, and is now in the early stages of construction.

Ranch-style houses the ultimate guide to the look and how to get it

ranch house interior design

To make your living more enjoyable, we have a list of ranch house interior design ideas. Ranch (also known as American ranch, California ranch, rambler, or rancher) is a domestic architectural style that originated in the United States. The ranch-style house is noted for its long, close-to-the-ground profile, and wide open layout. The style fused modernist ideas and styles with notions of the American Western period of wide open spaces to create a very informal and casual living style. We’re talking here about a deliberate new style of residential architecture—not the tract houses of a generation later. California architect Cliff May (1909–1989) is credited with the first modern Ranch, built in an Diego in 1932.

What are some different types of ranch homes?

Go for horizontal lines as they bring in a contemporary touch to the home’s exteriors and can make the overall look and feel of the house so much bigger and wider than it actually is. On top of the obvious aesthetics brought in by these vertical outdoor elements, they are also bound to amplify or boost your overall curb appeal. Hire out a professional landscaper but if you’re feeling a little adventurous, this is a little project you can take on yourself. Ranch homes are one-storied and minimalist in nature and they have the tendency to look bland on the exteriors.

Instead, treat your outdoor space like any other room in the house, complete with comfortable furniture, personable accents, and strategic lighting. Turns out, most ranch-style spaces boast an open-concept layout, giving dwellers the chance to craft their homes however they please. Ranch homes dipped in popularity shortly after they burst onto the architecture scene; however, the style made a huge comeback as suburbs became more prominent.

How to decorate in ranch house style

This smaller bungalow style features large windows, which are customary on ranch style homes, as well as an exterior painted in Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams. Additionally, the wood columns and stone walkway help the home blend into its natural surroundings. But they’re making a real comeback, and ranch homes are now the prized jewels of fixer-uppers.

Ranch homes are also great investments for renovators because of the price point, those open-layout floor plans, and they are relatively easy to raise or, if needed, to raze. Another reason there are so many ranch homes around is that they are the perfect type of property for so many residents, as we’ll discuss next. We talked about the post-WWII baby boom years when affordable homes were in demand for growing families, which helps to explain the great increase in number of ranch homes in the 1940s and ’50s.

Let’s take a deep dive into what makes the ranch-style house a home style that, now nearing its hundredth birthday, is sure to continue populating American suburbs for generations to come. The exterior can be made up of a mix of materials, including brick, stucco, and wood, or clad in siding. Some may have diamond-paned windows or Dutch doors with an upper half that could swing open, and all have large windows throughout. Ranch houses also often feature an attached front-facing garage and finished basement space. Although Dunst admits she takes the lead in interior design—“Jesse was a bachelor dude, so I brought decorating into his life,” she says, laughing—Plemons’s presence is unmistakable. Every room in the house contains bits of Texiana, or Texidermy, or whatever one calls objects redolent of the Lone Star State, where Plemons was born. An abundance of guitars, two pianos—a Steinway and a beloved Wurlitzer—and an antique parlor organ said to have belonged to the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson point to the actor’s passion for music.

She works closely with clients to ensure the vision for each project is executed seamlessly, while attention to detail is never forgotten.

Unlike the European pastiche of Colonial or Victorian houses, the ranch, or “rancher,” style started here, specifically in postwar Los Angeles, and quickly became a fixture of suburban landscapes across the U.S. Taking into consideration warmth, style, and privacy, you can choose between natural woven shades, wooden shutters, simple floor-to-ceiling draperies, Roman shades, and sheer curtains in light, airy fabrics. If you have a rather cramped living area in the dining room and have frequent guests to entertain, you can’t afford to clog the open space with more chairs, leaving no room for traffic and circulation. Instead, bring in upholstered benches that follow the color palette and theme of the space, and that hold a few people at once.

One of the things that make ranch houses really great is the way that they seamlessly connect indoor to outdoor living. Take a page out of that book by bringing some space for entertainment and taking visitors into the front of the house. Being single-story homes, ranch houses are cheaper to build than multistory properties, as they require less robust construction because they don’t need to support a second (or even third) floor and therefore call for less materials. Add all the new home construction—especially in huge preplanned housing developments—to the already-extant 20th-century ranch houses, and you get most of your answer. To think of the ranch-style house as one style of house is like saying all rock music sounds the same. (In other words…it’s wrong.) There are Spanish-style ranch homes with stucco walls and tiled roofs.

As we mentioned before, the ranch house was partially inspired (but albeit not entirely based on) the kind of squat little home you might have found on a sprawling cattle ranch in the 1800s or early 1900s. Many structures are decidedly Western, calling to mind the days of dude ranches and Mexican haciendas, while more modern styles featured simple and clean lines and mid-century elements. In the Midwest and the East, these homes incorporated colonial elements and materials.

This modern ranch style home looks large and inviting because of the picture windows, minimal landscaping, and lighting. The siding is painted in Graphite by Benjamin Moore, which has blue undertones that carry through the roof, porch, and walkway. A smaller bungalow ranch style home gets a modern update with large windows, an open porch, and a glass-paneled door with sidelights. The detached garage blends in with the surroundings so as to not draw the eye away from the home’s focal point — the welcoming porch and oversized modern light fixture. With its casual style and natural features, the modern farmhouse trend mixes well with a ranch style house.

Modern contemporary ranch homes often have interesting roof lines and porch features. While these can sometimes be challenging to design, they’re also fun features that can show off your home’s personality. The gray accent panels on both sides of this home present an illusion of larger windows and balance out the angles. Similarly, the large glass-paneled door and porch skylights give off a welcoming vibe as you enter the home. We love how a monochromatic look on a tiny home can actually make it feel bigger.

Winchester Mystery House San Jose, California Attractions

winchester mystery house photos

When you stand precisely in the middle of the turret, your voice bounces uncannily off the walls. No one knows what happened, but Houdini found the visit memorable enough that he sent a newspaper clipping about it to the house’s owner. The front hall staircase leads to a Tiffany-style stained-glass window that surely once provided bright beams of color. But it was later completely enclosed by a new exterior wall, presumably put up at Winchester’s request. Today, some strings of tiny lights illuminate it from behind.

Nowadays, thousands are still clamoring to get a peek inside, especially around Halloween time, Boehme said.

By design, the restoration left some intriguing rough edges. Near the home’s front door—now in use again—is a room with bare-board walls and a shallow butler’s pantry at the back, like a book squeezed into the end of a shelf. “She often would carve little spaces out of what existed,” Boehme explains.

William and Sarah had one daughter, Annie, who died at just 6 weeks old. They never had any other children, and William died 15 years later from tuberculosis, in 1881 at age 43. The Cap is an unfinished round room constructed with redwood beams.

Winchester first lived in San Francisco, but the weather bothered her arthritis. Instead, she decided to buy 40 acres of land and build a small farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley. "Some of them love the architecture, some want to see the ghosts, some like the history," Janan Boehme, the historian at the house, told Business Insider in October 2019. This ridiculous yet fascinating Victorian mansion is filled with 160 mostly non-utilitarian rooms with dead-end hallways and a staircase that runs up to a ceiling.

"Winchester was quiet, which suited Sarah because she was very quiet herself," the home's historian, Janan Boehme, told Insider. "She was also a very tiny lady. She stood at about 4 feet 10 inches. She was a private person." Closing times vary, please check our Buy Tickets page for current tour times. Tragedy befell Sarah – her infant daughter died of a childhood illness and a few years later her husband was taken from her by tuberculosis. It’s suggested that Winchester sealed off the room after she was trapped here during the earthquake of 1906. A 1 hour 5 minute guided tour of the Winchester House costs $41.99 for adults, $34.99 for seniors,  and $19.99 for children 5-12.

Winchester wanted the carriage room to be covered with a roof so that she could get in and out of the house without ever getting wet by the rain. The room is also notable because there is a strange door that opens onto a wall and another door that is too small to walk through. Most of the house still stands, and visitors can explore it today. "It helped her employ people and share her wealth that way. She just never really stopped building."

On the other hand, the front and older parts of the home had a traditional mansion feel to them and featured some well-furnished rooms for entertainment. We saw a ballroom, formal dining room, sitting rooms, organ, stained glass windows, chandeliers, and rooms finished to impress visitors. The first part of the home took us through the later construction in the back of the house. The rooms appeared to be an eclectic collection of fully and partially constructed spaces. The quality of the construction did not seem mansion-like to me in that the rooms did not display wealth or exceptional architectural features. A few years after the death of her husband, Sarah left her home in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1885 to relocate to San Jose, California.

Even more luxurious than the fixtures was the plumbing and electrical work. Rare for the time, the Winchester Mystery House boasted indoor plumbing, including coveted hot running water, and push-button gas lighting available throughout the home. Additionally, forced-air heating flowed throughout the house.

Parties for spirits

After the quake, Winchester had mantles and fronts torn off fireplaces and their brick chimneys encased in metal, probably so they wouldn’t crumble in the event of another disaster. Magnuson’s thought was to mix this up with new spaces to attract new and returning visitors. After ten intense months, 40 hidden spaces—including some even the staff had only rarely seen—opened to the public in May 2017. The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below.

There are windows on each of the four walls in this room, including on the ceiling and on the floor. This conservatory is down the hall from Winchester's bedroom. Winchester spent $5.5 million on her 24,000-square-foot home, which has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces. Although there are theories that the construction went on for 24 hours a day, Boehme said that is fiction.

The most notable date in the construction of Llanada Villa was April 18, 1906, when the great San Francisco earthquake caused tremendous devastation throughout the region, and Sarah Winchester’s home suffered severe damage. The house was forever changed when chimneys collapsed, a wing was destroyed, and a prominent seven-story tower toppled down. Damage from the earthquake can still be viewed at the property even today, and the mansion was never restored to its former prominence. I have known about this famous mansion since I was a child. Many years ago, a publishing company put out a series of books that featured cut-out paper models of various haunted, mysterious houses. I took the time to meticulously put together a model of the Winchester Mystery House.

"How could you bring in every aspect of a culture into the museum is a good question," said van Berkel. "I like it to think of how we could change these aspects in a more flexible way than maybe what is done of over the last years." "It's not only a museum for the children, but it is also museum for the parents," Van Berkel said. "And it's connected to the history of the location and how families here played in former times, on the little squares, and where several families took care of the kids." A Tour of the 24,000-Square-Foot Winchester Mansion in California

winchester mystery house photos

The consensus among the house’s staff is that she was a creative do-gooder who endured through profound personal loss. “She would give to causes that were dear to her, and she’d usually do it anonymously,” Boehme says. She paid her workers far more than the standard wage, and kept them on for many years in part because she wanted to ensure their livelihoods. Ignoffo speculates that she threw herself into her all-consuming building project to feel closer to her late husband—architecture had long been one of William Winchester’s passions. In the Daisy Bedroom—which is on the original tour—Winchester rang a bell to summon her servants, who couldn’t find her in the chaos.

Company

We joined a group guided tour that included 12 other people. Our tour guide was entertaining and energetic as she led us on a 65-minute scripted tour of the mansion. Along the way, we encountered a lot of unusual spaces, strange-looking rooms, quirky construction features, and stories of peculiar behavior by the mansion’s owner. Our guide also enhanced the strange and unusual parts of the home with corny jokes, intriguing ideas, and spooky suggestions. Even though it seemed a little too well rehearsed at times, all in all, it was a lot of fun.

Features of the house

Eventually, the path leads up to the Witch’s Cap in the South Turret, billed as the highlight of the new tour. To reach it you must pass through a corridor scaled for a child’s playhouse, narrow and scarcely five feet high. There’s light flowing in from occasional windows, but even so, it’s hard to orient yourself in space as the walls close in. Such beliefs wouldn’t have been particularly unusual at the time. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a surge of what was called spiritualism all over the country. “All these women, they lost their husbands, their sons, their brothers, their fathers.

Never Miss A Mysterious Moment

The floor plan is part of the Immersive 360° Tour, which includes "unprecedented access" to the home, including "...many rooms previously inaccessible on standard Estate tours." The cost? It's $8.99, and it also features a "Behind the Ropes" features (where, yes, you'll venture into rooms formerly roped-off). Throughout the years-long construction of the Winchester Mystery House, Sarah Winchester would never confirm that she was building a haunted house. Gold and silver chandeliers hung from the ceilings above hand-inlaid parquet flooring. Dozens of artful stained-glass windows created by Tiffany & Co. dotted the walls, including some designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. One window, in particular, was intended to create a prismatic rainbow effect on the floor when light flowed through it – of course, the window ended up on an interior wall, and thus the effect was never achieved.

Odd design elements, like stairways that lead to nowhere, also make this house so well known.

She hoped, perhaps, to get advice from the beyond as to how to spend her fortune or what to do with her life. Born around 1840, Sarah Winchester grew up in a world of privilege. She spoke four languages, attended the best schools around, married well, and eventually gave birth to a daughter, Annie. However, tragedy struck in her late twenties when Annie died, followed by the death of Sarah’s husband William more than a decade later. At the time, newspapers were filled with advertisements, luring people to move across the country and settle in the newly incorporated California.

It is also likely that the labyrinth construction of the home may have been the result of making the home functional after the earthquake. Furthermore, there are very few actual recorded incidences to back up the claims of the home being haunted by spirits. Because she was living off the gun company's fortune, the spiritualist told her to move to California and build a home that would appease and trap the ghosts who follow her.

It is true, however, that the remodeling of the house went on for decades. She was known for paying her workers well above the usual rate. Oftentimes, she would buy homes for her employees' families to live in while they worked on her home.

Visitors enter through the carriage room, which has large double doors.

The mansion is open almost every day, save for Christmas, and offers tours of the house, as well as the entire state (extra-spooky basement included). Reports of paranormal activity aren’t unusual at the estate, which is now known as the Winchester Mystery House and is considered one of the creepiest attractions on earth. In addition to 10,000 windows and 47 fireplaces, the manor has at least three ghosts. In 2018, Helen Mirren starred in Winchester as Sarah Winchester herself.

Explore a Winchester Mystery House Floor Plan

The standard hour-long guided mansion tour includes a romp through the gardens plus entry to an exhibition of guns and rifles. One particular attic space took the most effort, says the longtime house historian Janan Boehme, who helped with the restoration plans. There were staircases and things, but there was no railing, there was no safety at all,” she says. “If you walked across, you’d just fall through a hole.” The maintenance team had to build a new wooden walkway through the space. Shortly after her husband’s death, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, CA. There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September 5, 1922.

Far after the construction was completed, Winchester continued to make efforts to appease the victims of the Winchester rifles. Public DomainOne of the staircases to nowhere in the Winchester mansion. "I'd like to think that [people] come to appreciate Sarah as more than just this eccentric, ghost-ridden, tragic figure," Boehme said. "She was actually a pretty interesting person, a smart lady, and she was good to her employees. She was never afraid of trying something new. She really was a good person." The Hall of Fires is actually three small spaces that seem to have once been separated by curtains. Strangely, there are four fireplaces and three hot air vents in this space.

To this day, the cracked walls and torn wallpaper from that night remain, as do the panels of stained-glass flowers that give the room its name. “How would you feel if, all of a sudden, you got knocked out of bed by an earthquake? “You think the world is coming down around your ears.” After she was finally rescued, Winchester left the house and stayed on a houseboat in San Francisco Bay for a while. Perhaps the boat’s steadier rocking helped quell her fears.

Throughout the house, you can find staircases that lead to nowhere, doors that open onto walls, and rooms with windows on the floor. The bizarre design elements feed into the theory that Winchester was trying to trap and confuse the ghosts that haunted her, but Boehme said there's a more realistic explanation. Winchester designed the home with no blueprints and no formal design experience. These design oddities may have been mistakes or a simple change of mind. However, it is unclear to this day if these choices were deliberate or accidental.

Sarah’s inheritance was said to be more than 20 million dollars and included a 50 percent stake in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1881, Sarah was one of the wealthiest women in the world. The interior of the mansion remains closed due to the pandemic response, but there are open-air tours of Sarah's beautiful Victorian-style gardens.

And they were sad and desperate for a way to see that they were okay.” Winchester herself was dealing with the loss of her whole family. Exactly why Winchester embarked on this dizzying cycle of building, undoing and rebuilding is impossible to say. The medium reportedly instructed her to constantly build a house for these ghosts. A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus. But as Michele Debczak reports for Mental Floss, you can now explore the Winchester House from afar via a detailed video tour posted on the mansion’s website.

Molly Davies, president and CEO of Wise & Health Aging, called the delay unsurprising and upsetting, saying that after all the public interest in nursing homes during the epidemic of pandemic deaths, residents “have been orphaned” yet again. But his efforts alienated some in his own ranks who in 2015 formed an insurgent group known as the House Freedom Caucus. Increasingly exasperated with his untenable predicament, Boehner simply resigned in October of that year. Like Johnson an era later, Hastert was a relatively quiet member of the leadership who enjoyed goodwill generally in the rank and file. Hastert was speaker through the last two Clinton years and first six of the George W. Bush presidency.

The chamber has been frozen for the better part of a month as Republicans feud over who should be in charge, even as wars rage overseas and a government shutdown approaches. Representative Mike Johnson, a little-known social conservative from Louisiana, emerged on Tuesday night as the latest contender for the post after Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, dropped his bid only hours after securing the nomination. Mr. Emmer’s downfall followed a swift backlash from the right, including former President Donald J. Trump, that left his candidacy in shambles and the G.O.P. as divided as ever.

Instead, senators organized without incident and expeditiously vacated the Capitol to let their counterparts across the Rotunda sully themselves alone. Ms. Cole previously served as a clerk on the House Financial Services Committee and was appointed as the House reading clerk in 2007 by John Boehner, who was then the House minority leader, according to Roll Call. The two clerks, Tylease Alli and Susan Cole, have been an integral part of what is now the fifth longest speaker election, and television viewers have noticed.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, the GOP conference chair, pressed the administrators at the hearing on how they have handled antisemitic incidents on their campuses. University leaders have been toeing a line on how to express disdain about antisemitic language and enforce university policies while also allowing students to practice free speech, as they face accusations that colleges are not doing enough to protect Jewish students. And tensions have reached a fever pitch at some of the nation's most prestigious universities in recent days as the demonstrations have worn on. Schumer called for the next speaker to accept bipartisanship as the way forward, rather than relying solely on Republican votes for their policy proposals, and praised McCarthy for cutting deals to avoid a debt default and a government shutdown. GOP Rep. Garret Graves told reporters Wednesday that McCarthy is getting the office that McHenry has ordered Pelosi to vacate.

House conservatives are signaling they’ll give the newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson some runway and flexibility as the House barrels toward a November 17 spending deadline to fund the government. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger in which patient advocates railed against the delays and were told by a Department of Public Health official that the $349,455 study—first recommended in late 2021— would be completed soon. Nearly three months later, it’s still not done, and Barger’s staff tells me it appears it will take another two months for the report to be completed and publicly aired. But getting back to staffing, the new order requires facilities that receive federal funding to provide nearly 3.5 hours of nursing per patient per day, roughly one half-hour of RN coverage and roughly 2.5 hours of nursing aide coverage. It’s a creative way to hide profits by shifting assets to businesses that are less regulated than the healthcare industry, and, at the same time, build an argument against government interference.

But he voluntarily resigned after the GOP lost badly in the 2006 midterms, a defeat Bush called "a thumpin' " at the time. The No. 2 Republican at the time did not have the votes, and the No. 3 declined to run. The chairman of the Appropriations Committee was nominated by the party conference but withdrew after a magazine story accused him of marital infidelity. This story has been corrected to show the House will have to certify the winner of the 2024 presidential election, not the 2025 presidential election. Constitution putting the speaker second in the line of presidential succession. On his social media streaming show, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is facing charges in Georgia for trying to overturn the election results there, praised Johnson on Wednesday for refusing to accept Trump’s 2020 election loss.

This is a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar, with a hefty subwoofer, and its performance is equally thrilling in both movies and music. Add in a bunch of streaming features and you have the best surround system under a grand. If there was ever a bargain in home theater it was this -- for around the same price as the Elac speakers above you can get a full Dolby Atmos setup. Sound quality is excellent and the Klipsch kit includes all of the cables you need in the box.

Whoever wins the secret ballot vote for the nomination will face the arduous task of uniting the party behind them. The nominee will still need to secure a simple majority of all House members, which will translate to getting the votes of at least 217 of the 221 GOP members. Mr. Gaetz said on Tuesday that lawmakers should not give the post to somebody willing to sell “shares of himself to get” it. WASHINGTON — For days as hard-right lawmakers voted again and again to block him from becoming speaker, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California sat on the House floor with a grin plastered to his face.

Our coverage of the latest developments in the House speaker race continues here. Johnson proposed taking up individual bills between now and Nov. 17, when current funding expires. He said another stopgap measure — known as a continuing resolution — might be needed to prevent the Senate from "jam[ming] the House with a Christmas omnibus," referring to a consolidated spending bill.

McCarthy might be hinting he's willing to take the job back, but he's been telling his allies not to nominate or vote for him today. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., pushed for Republican unity amid the speakership nomination process, in a post on X. If Republicans can reach consensus about their preferred nominee, the full House will then vote on who the next speaker will be.

Under House rules, McCarthy was required to submit a list of possible stand-ins shortly after he was elected speaker. House rules dictate that in the event of a vacancy, the next member on the list would “act as speaker pro tempore until the election of a speaker or a speaker pro tempore.” McHenry was the first name on McCarthy’s list. McCarthy told Republicans on Tuesday night that he would not seek to regain the gavel, clearing the way for another candidate to take his place. After the House of Representatives voted Tuesday to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) from his position as speaker, even some lawmakers were confused about what would happen next. House Republicans will huddle behind closed doors today and vote to nominate a successor to McCarthy — but many remained pessimistic that the full chamber will quickly elect the winner.

His backers come from both the left and the right and disagree widely on many issues. Disaffected people are inherently hard to poll — they tend not to readily respond to surveys — and hard to predict in terms of turnout. One reason it’s hard to guess how much support Kennedy will win this fall is that polls have a hard time measuring how much support he has now. Anita Chabria and David Lauter bring insights into legislation, politics and policy from California and beyond. Rep. Rick Allen said that he told now-former House Speaker designee Tom Emmer that he opposed the Minnesota Republican's bid for the gavel because of Emmer voted to codify same-sex marriage. House Republicans have selected Rep. Mike Johnson as their next speaker nominee.

Exhausted from the feuding, which unleashed a barrage of recriminations and violent threats against lawmakers, both the right wing and mainstream Republicans finally united to elect Mr. Johnson, 51, in a 220-to-209 vote. "Hakeem Jeffries has not turned his back on the will of the American people. The son of two social workers, he's always stood by the side of working families. The most pressing needs of everyday Americans are his north star."

Scalise: The House is open and doing the people's business

Johnson, R-La., was nominated Tuesday after three previous nominees flamed out. He unified the fractious Republican Conference, winning votes from right-wing detractors of McCarthy, R-Calif., as well as centrist Republicans who opposed Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. WASHINGTON — Republicans elected a new speaker of the House on Wednesday in Rep. Mike Johnson, ending 22 days of a paralyzed chamber after a group of rebels overthrew Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

As for Tabassum, she said the decision to cancel her speech left her feeling “betrayed.” And dozens of student groups and an on-campus protest on Thursday have condemned the school’s decision. USC did not cite security as the reason for the latest cancellations, as it had on Monday. That day, the university kick-started a media storm, with reporting from The Times as well as the BBC, Reuters, Fox News, the New York Times and others after it canceled its valedictorian from speaking during graduation, citing unnamed threats.

Voting will be done verbally with members called by name alphabetically and then stating their choice for speaker. If a member doesn’t vote, they will get a chance to vote at the end of the roll call. There were 220 votes for Johnson and 209 votes for Democrat Hakeem Jeffries.

After a spectacle of arm-twisting on the House floor, Kevin McCarthy won over just enough of the far-right rebels he needed to become speaker. He swore in the chamber’s members, ending days of paralysis at the start of Republican rule. "That four threshold is very tough. It's a very tough thing, no matter who it is," Trump said, referring to the number of Republican defections a speaker candidate can afford to lose and still win on the floor with a GOP majority.

Rep. Kevin Hern, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, told reporters that he decided to forgo his candidacy for speaker and is instead supporting Rep. Mike Johnson. Johnson, a former radio host from Louisiana, was first elected to Congress in 2016. The House has now been without an elected speaker for three weeks, which means that it has not been able to consider or pass legislation to address a rising number of domestic and foreign crises, including providing aid for Israel or Ukraine. Johnson, who was first elected to Congress in 2016, voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results. Speaking to the chamber after his election, Johnson said the U.S. must rein in government spending and address the growing national debt, which he called "the greatest threat to our national security." Johnson prevailed after a chaotic process that saw three other GOP nominees fail to unite the party and secure a majority.

Johnson won the speaker's gavel in a single round of voting, with the support of all Republicans in attendance. Jeffries closed his remarks declaring, "Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election. He's doing a great job under difficult circumstances and no amount of election denialism will ever change that reality. Not now. Not ever." The Democratic leader then took his place at the dais and delivered a speech cheering the work of House Democrats so far this Congress, while decrying the dysfunction that gripped the House over the last three weeks. Jeffries, the Democratic leader, presented him with the gavel, calling him a "family man, a hardworking man, a Baptist man, a Southern man, a son of a firefighter's household." Asked if he would bring a vote to oust Johnson if he put forth a short-term spending bill at current spending levels, Rep. Matt Gaetz said he’s optimistic Johnson will be able to actually pass the individual spending bills. This marks a clear departure from how those same members viewed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision earlier this month to put a short-term spending bill on the floor, which ultimately led to his ouster.

No secret deals for Emmer, colleague says

That's what the Democrats did when a motion to vacate the chair ousted the last Republican speaker, Kevin McCarthy, last fall. Trump’s supporters in trying to overturn the election have not fared well in elections since the violent assault on the Capitol, with a slate of conspiracy theorists attempting to assume positions overseeing elections in key swing states all losing their races last year. Instead, they have excelled at winning internal party contests and taking control of some state parties. Now they also have claimed one of the nation’s most powerful political positions. Congress has yet to pass a comprehensive budget package that can satisfy both sides of the aisle. The House has to elect a speaker, pass a funding bill, work out any differences with the Democratic-controlled Senate, and get the funding signed into law before Nov. 17 to avoid a government shutdown.

All three met with Mr. Trump or White House officials as they discussed how to fight the election results, according to evidence gathered by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack. Mr. McCarthy still wins re-election in the district with two-thirds of the vote, but the passionate minority of the majority has become his Achilles’ heel, as it has been on the House floor this week. Two Republicans who were absent for personal reasons from votes earlier in the day, Ken Buck of Colorado and Wesley Hunt of Texas, were expected to be back in time for the vote. That would mean Mr. McCarthy needs just two more in his column, and potentially just one if two or more of his opponents do not vote or vote present. Those compromises delivered a breakthrough for Mr. McCarthy, who in votes on Friday afternoon won support from a sizable chunk of the Republicans who had consistently refused to back him — though he remained short of the majority to win. Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama has been in the House since 2015, and he currently serves as the chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.

ELAC's Andrew Jones just recently revised the Debut B6 speaker, now it's the Debut 2.0 B6.2 ($298/pair), and the sound is much improved. Home theater buyers can partner the Debut B6.2 with ELAC's matching Debut Series F5.2 towers ($299/each), C5.2 center channel speaker ($198) and an ELAC SUB3010 subwoofer ($449). With great sound, a compact size and the Alexa voice assistant built-in, the Sonos Era 100 packs a lot of punch, making it the best smart speaker for the money. I've highlighted the best wired and wireless speakers I've tested costing between $50 and $1,000. While most of the included systems are powered speakers, you'll also find passive bookshelf speakers, such as the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2, which just need to be paired with a great AV receiver. “[Emmer] asked us to come down and ask to speak to why we could not support him” in his quest for the gavel, Allen said.

Rep. Kelly Armstrong, a North Dakota Republican and a close McCarthy ally, said there are a “lot of raw nerves” and that the next speaker candidates must make clear that they will “never” allow a single GOP member to oust a sitting speaker again. Aside from excellent sound, the Echo Studio responds to hundreds of voice commands, like creating calendar events, or getting real-time news and sports scores. The speaker’s design also showcases bass and treble control knobs, allowing you to customize your sound however you want. Designed to produce immersive, surround sound audio through a three-way driver system, the WOBURN III is a great choice for when you’re throwing a party or just for when you’re listening to jazz tunes all by yourself. It got a vented tweeter design and cerametallic woofers, which the brand says should deliver distortion-free, clear audio. This home speaker was even designed to deliver amplified bass, so whether you’re gaming, streaming or just jamming out to your favorite songs the audio will be crisp and punchy.

Late Monday night after his nomination as speaker, Johnson joined other Republicans surrounding him in laughing at a reporter who’d had the temerity to ask about his “effort to overturn the 2020 election results.” At his side, Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina yelled “Shut up! Mike Johnson’s victory ends three weeks of squabbling among House Republicans — and cements their pro-Trump, hard-line faction as the face of the national party. At times over the last 22 days, as Republicans proved too riven to pick a new leader, Gaetz and his far-right cohorts had reason to worry that their coup would result in little change at best, and, at worst, that it might backfire.
